American Pie Songsheet
Piano Sheet Music
Don McLean released the hit song, American Pie in 1971. McLean has remained fairly quiet on the meaning of some of the lyrics, but on the whole, the song is about a plane crash in 1959 killing one of McLean’s musical legends, Buddy Holly. The crash also killed Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.). It was a hug hit across the world, reaching the number 1 spot in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and peaking at number 2 in the UK chart in 1972.
American Pie is officially the longest song ever to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, running at 8 minutes and 36 seconds. Many radio stations refused to play the song due to their 3 minutes 30 seconds rule. However, in 2000, pop mega star Madonna released a version of American Pie and drastically shortened it to suit radio playing. It was released as the soundtrack for her film The Next Best Thing. Her co-star Rupert Everett convinced Madonna to cover the song and it turned out to be a great idea as it reached number 1 in Canada and the UK and many other European countries. It’s popularity makes it one of the most ordered of Decplay’s selection of piano sheet music.
