Song Background

“Baa, Baa, Black Sheep” is an old English nursery rhyme, the earliest surviving version of which dates from 1731. The words have changed little in two and a half centuries. It is sung to a variant of the 1761 French melody Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman. There is some debate about the meaning of the rhyme, which some suggest is a complaint against the wool tax that existing in medieval England. The words have changed little over the centuries, making it a very enduring nursery rhyme and the phrase Black Sheep has worked its way into every day language and literature, as a metaphor.
