The psychedelic pop song, California Dreamin’ by The Mamas and the Papas was released in 1965. It was written by two of the bands members who are a married couple, John and Michelle Phillips. John Phillips had a dream about the song one night and subsequently woke up his wife to help him write it. It was produced by Lou Adler who had worked with some huge musical legends, such as Carole King, Johnny Rivers, Herb Alpert and Sam Cooke. Rolling Stone magazine listed California Dreamin’ as number 89 in its list of The 500 Greatest Song of All Time.

The song has been covered by many artists since its release in 1965. R.E.M and Queen Latifah are just two of the many. Meat Loaf recorded California Dreamin’ with Patti Russo for his album Hell in a Handbasket. In addition, The Beach Boys released a compilation greatest hits album in 1986 called Made in U.S.A. and they recorded the song for that. They also created a video which John and Michelle Phillips appeared in.

The song was featured in many films and TV shows. Most famously, it was used on the soundtrack of the huge hit film Forrest Gump. It was also used for the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, but The Bald Eagles recorded the version for that and also in the movie Congo. It’s wide use and popularity make it a perfect piece to learn using Decplay’s piano sheet music.
