Song Background

Can’t Smile Without You was originally recorded by The Carpenters and featured on their album, A Kind of Hush in 1976. However, it became a hit when Barry Manilow released it, altering the lyrics slightly. The Carpenters sang the lyrics, “I can’t laugh and I can’t walk / I’m finding it hard even to talk”. Manilow’s version sang, “I can’t laugh and I can’t sing / I’m finding it hard to do anything”. It is thought that Manilow’s rendition was the original lyrics, but the Carpenters changed it as it “I can’t sing” was contradictory when being sung.

The writers of Can’t Smile Without You are Christian Arnold, David Martin and Geoff Morrow. Morrow is famous for writing many Elvis Presley songs, such as A Little Bit of Green, This is the Story and Let’s Be Friends. Arnold, Martin and Morrow as a trio wrote songs for Billy Fury and Guys and Dolls, getting a music chart number 2 with There’s A Whole Lot of Loving by Guys and Dolls.

It is thought that one of Barry Manilow’s friends was searching for an ‘I miss you’ card as Manilow lived far away. A card with the quote “I can’t smile without you” on was purchased and sent to Manilow, giving him the idea for the song. Record executive, Clive Davis thought it was a fantastic idea and employed Arnold, Martin and Morrow.

Premier League football team Tottenham Hotspur see the song as being part of their club, with the lyrics being used on merchandise and banners as a slogan for them. After Spurs won the League Cup in 2008, fans attempted to get the song to number 1 in the UK music charts to commemorate the win. The song is regularly used in films, most famously in Four Weddings and a Funeral and the opening of Starsky & Hutch.  The popularity of Can’t Smile Without You makes it a perfect piece to learn using Decplay’s piano sheet music.
