Danny Boy Songsheet
Piano Sheet Music
The famous Irish folk song Danny Boy, can be learned using our piano sheet music. It is a song which has caused confusion over the years. Originally, the words to the song were said to have been written in 1910 by English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly in Bath, Somerset. In 1913, his sister-in-law in the US sent him a copy of Londonderry Air and he subsequently changed the lyrics of Danny Boy to fit with the rhyme of Londonderry Air. Recently, family papers of the Weatherly family were discovered, finding that his sister-in-law, Margaret, visited him in Bath, thus singing to him the tune of Londonderry Air, with her words that she had written about her father.
Another rumour about the meaning and story behind the song is of a father singing to his son named Danny, before leaving to go to war in Ireland.
Danny Boy is a song that many people around the world think of when Ireland is mentioned. Most of the Irish are proud of this song too, with it being played as a victory anthem for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.
Over the last 75 years, Danny Boy has been covered by some of the biggest names to exist in the music industry. In 1940, Judy Garland sang her own version for the Little Nellie Kelly soundtrack. Also, Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, Cher, Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and Tony Bennett sang their own versions of the Irish song. More recently, Eric Clapton, Sinead O’Connor, Charlotte Church and Eva Cassidy have performed their own renditions.
