Fairytale of New York Songsheet

Piano Sheet Music

Since its release in 1987, Fairytale of New York is one the most popular Christmas songs in the English speaking world.   You can learn to play this popular song using our piano sheet music.  The song by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl was voted as the UK’s favourite Christmas song of all time in 2004 in a poll by VH1.

Fairytale of New York was written by two of The Pogues members, Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan. MacGowan was also the male lead singer in the song. The idea of the Christmas tune actually started off as a bet. The Pogues producer, Elvis Costello, bet MacGowen and Finer that they wouldn’t be able to write a Christmas song that wasn’t cheesy or slushy, hence the storyline of a drunken Irishman.

In the year of its release, Fairytale of New York made it to the number 1 spot in the Irish music charts and number 2 in the British charts, but was pipped to the post by The Pet Shop Boys’ cover of Elvis Presley’s Always on my Mind. The song was re-released in 2005, with all of the proceeds going to the charity campaigning for the truth behind Fairytale in New York singer Kirsty MacColl’s death, Justice for Kirsty, and a mixture of homeless charities. Since the 2005 re-release, it has made an appearance in the UK top 20 ever since.

Katie Melua sang the female lead in Fairytale of New York with The Pogues in 2005 on a Jonathan Ross Christmas Special, making it the first time the full band had performed that song on TV since 1988. Various other artists have also sang their own versions of the Christmas song, such as Sinead O’Connor, Coldplay, Florence & The Machine lead vocalist Florence Welch, Ronan Keating and KT Tunstall.
