Is This the Way to Amarillo Songsheet

Piano Sheet Music

The catchy tune Is This the Way to Amarillo was originally written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield about a man travelling to Amarillo, Texas, to find his girlfriend. In 1977, the song made it to number 44 in the Billboard charts. However, the song was taken over by Yorkshire born Tony Christie and released the song in 1971 reaching number 18 in the UK Single Chart. It made the number one spot in European countries, Germany and Spain.

These days, the song is famous down to the popular British comedian, Peter Kay. To raise money for the Comic Relief charity event in 2005, Kay released Tony Christie’s song and filmed a video of himself miming it with some famous faces. Kay recruited Christie himself to star in the video as well as Queen stars, Brian May and Roger Taylor. Shaun Ryder and Bez from the famous Mancunian band, The Happy Mondays made an appearance as well. Other famous faces include, Michael Parkinson, Kay’s sidekick Paddy McGuinnes, Heather Mills, Ronnie Corbett and Jimmy Savile. Famous TV characters also appeared like Sooty & Sweep and Mr Blobby.

Kay’s charity stunt caused Christie’s original version to boom back into the UK charts reaching number one and staying there for seven weeks. Kay and Christie’s efforts for Comic Relief contributed to the charity raising £63m in 2005.

Championship football team, Bolton Wanderers regularly use Is This the Way to Amarillo as their goal song and Bolton boxer Amir Khan played the song on his entry to the ring in his last amateur fight against Mario Kindelan.  You can learn this catchy tune using the DecPlay method and our piano sheet music.
