Silent Night Songsheet
Piano Sheet Music
This popular, soft Christmas carol, Silent Night was written and composed in 1818. Franz Xaver Gruber composed and Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics in a small town in Austria called Obendorf bei Salzburg. Gruber was an Austrian primary school teacher and a church organist. Since his success with Silent Night, he wrote other arrangements for organs, orchestras and choirs and many of those are still sung in Austrian churches today.
The first time it was ever performed was on Christmas Eve in a village in Oberndorf on the Salzach River. Both Mohr and Gruber performed it along with the St Nicholas parish church choir during mass. Austria still sees Silent Night (translated from Stille Nacht in Austrian) as a national treasure. It is not allowed to be played in public before the Christmas Eve. It was originally an upbeat, dance-like song, but when Episcopalian bishop, John Freeman Young translated and published Silent Night in 1859, it was slowed down into a more lullaby-like melody.
As with most popular Christmas carols, Silent Night has been covered and performed by some huge music artists in recent times. Artists like Frank Sinatra, Andrea Bocelli, Bing Crosby, Plácido Domingo, John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Mary J. Blige and Boys II Men. A member of the Glee Cast has also done a rendition of Silent Night for their Christmas album, Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album Volume 3.
