The national anthem of the United States of America is The Star Spangled Banner and was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and fitted to a tune by John Stafford Smith. Smith was actually a British composer and musicologist. Key’s lyrics and Smith’s composition were introduced to each other by Key’s brother-in-law. The Star Spangled Banner was originally used in 19th century for bands playing at public events and in particular, celebrations for July 4th, America’s day of independence. The secretary of the US Navy, Benjamin F. Tracy made it official in 1889 that The Star Spangled Banner should be played when raising the American flag. This was the beginning of it becoming the patriotic American anthem.
In 1931, President Herbert Hoover signed a law that announced The Star Spangled Banner as the USA’s official national anthem. From then, it has been played at events of all kinds throughout the US, such as sports and memorials. At the beginning of every NBA, NFL, MLS, MLB and NHL games, the national anthem is played or performed by special guests. In 1991, the late Whitney Houston performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl XXV and it was subsequently released as a single. Historically, after the September 11th attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, The Queen played The Star Spangled Banner at Buckingham Palace to show support for Britain’s ally.
