Song Background

Three Blind Mice is an old English song which was published in 1609 and has become a very popular children’s nursery rhyme. It entered children’s literature in 1842 when it was published in a collection by James Orchard Halliwell. As with many old songs, there is debate about the original meaning of the lyrics, some saying it refers to Queen Mary I of England blinding and executing three Protestant bishops, but others question the historical accuracy of ths account.

The song can be sung ‘in a round’ where different singers start the song at different times, blending the simple melody into harmonies.
