I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here 2013 Joey Essex Piano

As seen on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here 2013 Joey Essex (at 12mins 50 secs on following YouTube video ), playing a song on the piano that others recognise is incredibly quick and so easy that even Joey Essex can do it!

But what is the secret of making it so easy???

(forward the video slider to 12 mins 50 seconds to see Joey Essex play piano by numbers)

The Secret of Joey Essex Piano Playing

Of course, what Joey played were 3 very simple tunes, with only the melody being played ie without any accompaniment (chords, bass or harmonies), yet this shows that playing just a few notes, even played out of time, can still be recognised by others easily.

It works because there are only 7 different notes in a standard scale. These can be described in different ways  (eg doh, ray, mee, fah, soh, lah, tee or 1 to 7, or c, d, e, f, g, a, b) and the vast majority of famous songs use only these notes (some non-standard notes are sometimes added to a minority of songs). The notes repeat in sequence up and down the keyboard, so that after note 7, the next note is note ‘1’ with the sequence 1 to 7 repeating again (just in a higher pitch or ‘octave’). The DecPlay rapid results piano method uses lines below and above the number to show whether it is a low, medium or high pitch, thereby allowing melodies to cover 3 or more octaves, whilst still only using the numbers 1 to 7.

Joey Essex only used notes 1 to 6 for the melody, again showing how music is constructed from very simple structures and patterns, which are not conveyed by the complex nature of traditional music notation and teaching methods.

The Secret of Playing PIano Chords

But this is only the start of the secret – not only are the melodies very simple and made up of only 7 notes, but also the vast majority of songs have only 6 different chords (which are several related notes played simultaneously) which make up the accompaniment. Many songs use only 3 or 4 of these, so that learning the chords to songs can be incredibly quick. For example, Twist and Shout (Beatles) uses chords 1, 4 and 5 (eg C, F and G) as does La Bamba, as does The First Cut is The Deepest, as does Wild Thing, the vast majority of Rock and Roll songs and a multitude of other popular songs.

The secret to learning to play these chords quickly, is to learn the ‘chord pattern’, which enables you to play the chord by simply finding the first note and playing the 2 other notes within the chord by using a pre-defined chord ‘pattern’ of notes (which takes seconds to learn), rather than having to identify all 3 notes individually within each separate chord, thereby cutting the effort down by two thirds.
